Law firm SEO is the work that puts your firm in front of people searching for a lawyer, in Google Maps, in search results and in AI answers, and turns those searches into consultations and signed cases. 2Marketing provides SEO services for lawyers in Canada and the US. Most law firm SEO in Canada costs $1,500 to $10,000 a month, and our plans start at $2,500, with no long-term contract.
Legal search is some of the most expensive real estate on Google. Clicks on ads for personal injury, family law or criminal defence can cost more than a small firm's daily budget, which is exactly why organic rankings are worth so much. A firm that ranks for "family lawyer Mississauga" or "car accident lawyer near me" gets calls every week without paying for each one. Most law firm websites don't rank because they treat the whole practice as one page. Clients search one problem at a time, usually under stress, and they call the firm that answers their exact question first. This page explains how law firm SEO works, what it includes, what it costs in Canada, and how to tell a good legal SEO agency from one that will waste your budget.
Law firm SEO means optimizing a firm's website, Google Business Profile, legal directory listings and online reputation so it ranks for the legal problems clients search for. Our law firm search engine optimization work, sometimes called attorney search engine optimization, covers four areas: practice area content, local visibility, authority and trust, and the technical health of the site. It's different from general SEO in three ways. The competition is fierce, because a single signed case can be worth tens of thousands of dollars. The content is regulated, because law societies and state bars set rules on how lawyers advertise. And the stakes for the reader are high, which puts legal pages in the category Google treats most carefully for accuracy and expertise. A legal SEO strategy has to account for all three from the start.
Every practice area has its own search behaviour, and each page has to match it.
| Practice area | How clients search | What the page needs |
|---|---|---|
| 01Personal injury | Urgent and local: "car accident lawyer near me" | Free consultation, contingency fee explanation, claim timeline, fast contact |
| 02Family law | Emotional and research-heavy: "how does custody work in Ontario" | Clear process guides, costs, what to bring, a calm tone |
| 03Criminal defence | Urgent, often late at night: "DUI lawyer Toronto" | 24-hour contact, clear next steps, bail and court process |
| 04Real estate law | Transactional: "real estate lawyer closing cost" | Fixed fee ranges, closing checklist, turnaround times |
| 05Wills and estates | Planned: "cost of a will in Toronto" | Pricing, process, estate administration guides |
| 06Employment law | Problem-first: "wrongful dismissal severance" | Severance guidance, deadlines, consultation offer |
| 07Immigration | Program-first, often multilingual | Program pages, fees, timelines, licensing |
Two patterns matter most. Urgent practice areas are won in the map pack, where the client calls one of the first three firms they see. Research-heavy practice areas are won by the firm whose guides the client reads over several days, and increasingly by the firm whose content ChatGPT or Google's AI Overview quotes when the client asks a question.
Three things decide most legal rankings: detailed practice area pages, a strong local presence for each office, and links and mentions from credible legal and local sources. Attorney SEO also depends heavily on reviews, since clients choosing a lawyer read them closely. Everything else, from site speed to schema, supports those three. If an agency's plan doesn't put most of the budget into those areas, ask why.
In Ontario, the Law Society of Ontario's Rules of Professional Conduct govern how lawyers market their services. They limit claims that can't be verified, restrict how results are described and prevent lawyers from calling themselves specialists unless they are certified. In the US, state bars apply rules based on the ABA Model Rules on advertising, and some states require disclaimers on case results. Every page we write stays within those rules, and a lawyer at your firm approves content before it goes live. That approval step also strengthens the page, because Google gives weight to expert authorship on legal topics.
Every month you get one report showing rankings by practice area, calls and consultation requests from organic search and Google Maps, and what we did.
Local profile and directory fixes can bring more calls within weeks. Practice area pages usually start ranking within three to six months. Competitive practice areas in large cities, such as personal injury in Toronto or New York, often take six to twelve months or longer. Google itself says no one can guarantee a first-place ranking, so be cautious of any agency that promises one. We report on consultations and signed cases, with rankings alongside them.
Most law firm SEO in Canada costs between $1,500 and $10,000 a month, depending on your market, practice areas and how competitive your target searches are. Solo lawyers in smaller cities can compete at the lower end. Personal injury and family law firms in Toronto or Vancouver usually need to invest more, because every competitor is investing too.
| Plan | Best for | What's included | Monthly price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 01Practice | Solo lawyers and small firms in less competitive markets | One office, up to 3 practice areas, Google Business Profile, directories, reviews, monthly report | $2,500 |
| 02Growth | Multi-lawyer firms in competitive cities | Up to 8 practice areas, content and link building, AI search visibility | $4,500 |
| 03Competitive | Personal injury and high-competition practice areas in major cities | Full practice area coverage, aggressive link building, multiple offices | From $8,000 |
Several things move the price: the practice areas you target, the city, the number of offices, the state of your current site, and how quickly you want to grow. A family law firm in Hamilton needs far less than a personal injury firm competing across the GTA. We send a fixed quote after a free audit, and there's no long-term contract.
A good legal SEO agency should answer these questions plainly.
| Good sign | Red flag |
|---|---|
| 01Plan built around your practice areas and case values | The same package offered to every firm |
| 02Reporting on consultations and signed cases | Reporting on traffic and rankings only |
| 03Links earned from legal and local sources | Hundreds of links promised each month |
| 04A lawyer approves content before publishing | Content published without your review |
| 05Month-to-month terms | A 12-month lock-in before any results |
Good lawyer SEO marketing, or attorney SEO marketing as it's called in the US, is specific about practice areas, directories and bar rules. Vague proposals usually produce vague results.
Law firm SEO is optimizing a firm's website, Google Business Profile, legal directory listings and reviews so it ranks when people search for a lawyer or a legal problem. It focuses on practice area pages, local visibility and trust, and it is measured by consultations and signed cases rather than traffic alone.
Profile and directory fixes can bring more calls within weeks. Practice area pages usually rank in three to six months, and competitive practice areas in large cities often take six to twelve months or longer. SEO keeps building after that, as long as the work continues.
Most law firm SEO in Canada costs between $1,500 and $10,000 a month. With 2Marketing, plans start at $2,500 a month for a small firm, $4,500 for multi-lawyer firms in competitive cities, and from $8,000 for personal injury and other high-competition practice areas. You get a fixed quote after a free audit.
Because the work varies. Ranking a wills lawyer in a smaller city takes a handful of pages and a strong local profile. Ranking a personal injury firm in Toronto takes dozens of pages, steady link building and months of competition with firms spending heavily. The practice area, city and number of offices drive most of the difference.
Start with your Google Business Profile, then make sure your name, address and phone number match exactly on legal directories such as Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Lexpert and the Canadian Law List, and on general ones like Yelp, YellowPages.ca and Bing Places. Complete each profile fully. Consistency matters more than the number of listings.
Yes. For most firms, organic search and Google Maps become the lowest-cost source of new consultations once rankings are established, because you don't pay for each click the way you do with ads. The firms that benefit most track calls and consultations by practice area, so they can see which pages bring cases.
AI tools help with research and first drafts, but legal content needs a lawyer's review for accuracy and compliance with advertising rules. Unreviewed AI content is a real risk in a regulated profession, and it tends to be generic, which makes it less likely to rank or be cited.
Compare what each will deliver in the first 90 days, how they will measure consultations, where links will come from and who reviews content for compliance. A higher price with specific deliverables is often better value than a lower price with vague ones.
